Reach is the cheapest thing a creator sells, and it’s the only thing most brands have ever invested in.

Trust is the scarcest resource in marketing right now. People skip the ads, mute the brands, and assume the reviews are fake. Confidence in the institutional system of media, platforms, and even search keeps sliding. But people still trust people. Specifically, the creators they’ve chosen: the finance explainer they’ve followed for years, the chef whose recipes actually work, the person whose apartment renovation they’re weirdly invested in. That trust is earned daily, in public light of day. No brand channel can buy anything like it.

That alone should put creators as a critical beam of brand building. Two more things make it urgent:

  1. What creators say about your brand is what AI will say about your brand. Large language models learn from the open web, and the open web is increasingly creator content. When someone asks an AI assistant “what’s the best running shoe for flat feet,” the answer gets assembled from thousands of creator reviews, videos, and comment threads. The influencer conversation happening about your brand today is training tomorrow’s answer engine. Show up in it or get summarized without your input. Or worse, get overlooked altogether.

  1. 360° orbit around the brand. Awareness, sure. Consideration, obviously. But also advocacy, community, and the ongoing reasons to keep caring after the purchase are the parts of a brand ecosystem most media can’t touch.

So: creators hold the trust, they’re writing your brand’s permanent record, and they work the entire brand ecosystem.

And how do most brands buy them? Impressions. For years, marketers have talked about creators as an awareness channel. More recently, they have been pulled lower down the funnel through affiliate links, social commerce and performance models.

That’s not a strategy. That’s audience escort work.

The truth is that reach is, in fact, real value… but it’s just one of five.

Developed by our Associate Director of Strategy, Urvashi Ajmera, we’ve been building a framework at Barbarian called The New Influencer Currency. This shows how to strategically shape influencer investment around business problems. Its core determination is that creators deliver five distinct layers of value, and most brands are only paying for one.

Cultural Cachet

What does associating with this creator say about you as a brand and to which cultural circles?

Taste endorsement, subculture credibility, and participation in real discourse are the levers that move long-term brand equity.

Community Access

Are you reaching specific people who care, or just more people who scroll?

Niche communities, hyper-engaged fandoms, and geo- or demo-specific audiences are where creators act like access keys into worlds your brand doesn’t yet belong to.

Relatability

Does the creator make your brand feel like it belongs in someone’s actual life?

Peer trust, environment fit, and contextual storytelling are what turn awareness into intent.

Content Value

What is the standalone value of the assets creators produce for your ecosystem?

Social-first stories, unique styles, and “hard to shoot” content that can be repurposed across paid, owned, and experiential channels are where creator programs quietly transform marketing efficiency.

Reach & Amplification

Finally, how far and how often does the story travel?

Impressions, engagement rates, algorithm lift, formats, and keywords only matter when they’re fueling one of the other four value layers instead of existing in a vacuum.

Different archetypes deliver radically different mixes of the five value layers, and your roster should be engineered accordingly.

A celebrity delivers cachet and scale. A niche expert delivers community and conversion. A comedian delivers virality and voice. Which means “we work with influencers” is not an answer. The question is what you’re actually buying — and whether it maps to what your brand needs.

The full framework goes deeper: how each layer ladders to a business goal, how to measure it, which creator archetypes deliver which currencies, and how to brief each of them without killing the thing that makes them valuable. We’ll be sharing more detail on the framework and how it applies to real brand scenarios and creator archetypes through upcoming Barbarian content.
